Indian pacer Shardul Thakur will play seven matches for Essex this season.

The Essex club has signed a contract with 33-year-old Indian fast bowler Shardul Thakur for seven matches in this season's County Championship. Thakur, who has played 83 matches for India, including 11 Tests and 72 white-ball games, has also won the Indian Premier League twice with Chennai Super Kings.

"I am thrilled to join Essex this summer," said Thakur. "It’s a new challenge and an opportunity to showcase my skills."

Cricket director Chris Silverwood noted that signing Thakur was a key goal for the club, as he is not only a top-quality bowler but also a valuable lower-order batsman.

Thakur will make his Essex debut in April in a match against Surrey at Chelmsford and will participate in several other games through May, finishing his stint with matches against Worcestershire and Surrey.
