Ashwin's unexpected exit: Shastri reflects on how two spinners changed the course of the series.

Ravichandran Ashwin shocked the cricketing world by announcing his retirement from international cricket after the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The 38-year-old spinner ended his career with 765 victories in 285 matches, becoming India's second-highest wicket-taker.

Former India player and coach Ravi Shastri expressed surprise at Ashwin's decision, especially after India opted for a two-spinner strategy in the fourth Test. Ashwin was replaced by Washington Sundar, who replaced Shubman Gill.

"If Ashwin had known about the plan, he might have reconsidered his decision," Shastri said.

The changes in the batting order saw Rahul move up to number three and captain Rohit Sharma opening with Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jaiswal scored 82 runs as India trailed Australia by 310 runs.
