Longer series, new rivals, and growing interest – Test cricket is set for change!

England is planning to expand five-Test series beyond the "Big Three" — Australia, India, and England. The last time they played a five-match series against South Africa was in 2003 and against Pakistan in 1992.

According to The Telegraph, such series could begin no earlier than 2028, as England already has scheduled tournaments, including the home Ashes in 2027. The main candidates for extended series are Pakistan and South Africa, teams with which England has historic rivalries and strong fan support.

However, a longer series does not mean an increase in the total number of Tests. The format remains English cricket’s primary source of revenue, and sold-out stadiums ensure that the strategy of attracting strong opponents makes financial sense.
